Gus Miller is the Johnny Hartman of Virginia. Some disagree because he phrases
beautifully like Franky. But nobody loved Sinatra, at least not anybody who
knew him. Like Johnny Hartman, Gus Miller is somebody everyone loves,
especially the musicians. And we love Gus and Johnny for the same reasons.
Gus is self-effacing. With Gus it is all about the music.
Many (most) singers are about me, me, I, I. Gus is just one of the musicians.
He, like Hartman, is not a scat singer.
Gus uses the words to tell a story. Always staying with the form seems to
come naturally. The other comparison to Hartman is his rich, full voice.
And he has a very large range. That makes finding keys easy. Feed Gus the
right chord changes and he is off, just like a horn player.
All of the
musicians, including John Coltrane, loved Johnny Hartman, but you the reader
may never have heard of him. Unfortunately that is another similarity.
All the folks who have heard Gus Sing know who he is and come out when he
performs. To make matters worse, like Rene Marie, Gus has started late in
seriously following a professional singing career. But pay attention to him.
