Obituary
Lynwood Barry "Lenny" Martin, 63, of Roanoke passed away
Thursday, September 11, 2003. "Lenny" was a member of the Lucy
Addison class of 1957 and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Lenny first began playing the trombone at Lucy Addison High
School under the direction of Joseph Finley. He also played the gui-
tar and base.
He and friends, William Payne (drums), James (Dump)Bumbry,
Melvin Owens (tenor) and Leon Hooper formed a band called the
"Corvettes." Lenny also played with Ronnie Law, Jimmy Lewis,
Frank Dean and Sonny Womack.
After moving to Chicago, He traveled on the road with major
bands, playing with Dionne Warwick, Curtis Mayfield, Duke El-
lington and many others. He was an accomplished musician, having
toured worldwide with the U.S. Army Orchestra and won several
trophies. "Lenny" also toured with Jerry Butler and performed lo-
cally and nationally with various groups. "Lenny" played at the
Shenandoah Club for many years.
After returning to Roanoke, he played with Fats Wright, John
Hayslep and The Big Band, Bob Hale, Dave Figg, Morris Elam,
Hugh Ennis, Don Pullen, Earl Pullen and Bug Hughes just to name
a few. Lenny loved jazz and played music with his heart and soul.
Lenny never talked much about religion, but found in his posses-
sions were prayers, which lead me to believe, he believed in a
higher power which was God.
He was predeceased by his parents Lindsey L. Sr. and Elizabeth
Harris Martin; his siblings, Priscilla M. Pullins, Elsie M. Rembert.

Survivors include his son, Anthony W. Harris; aunt, Carrie Har-
ris Prince; all of Roanoke and numerous other nephews, nieces,
cousins and special friends.
